Gotham’s New Animated Universe: Three Epic Series Set to Debut
The animation landscape is buzzing with exciting news following a joint presentation by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The studio unveiled three brand-new animated series poised to redefine beloved DC characters: Absolute Batman, Joker: Laugh Riot, and Krypto.
These projects promise deep dives into the mythology of Gotham, offering fresh, ambitious takes on some of DC’s most iconic figures. The excitement is palpable as creators reveal unique interpretations that blend classic lore with modern, gritty storytelling.
Absolute Batman plunges viewers into a radically reimagined vigilante narrative. This series centers on Bruce Wayne, a 24-year-old blue-collar civil engineer who has lost one parent. Operating under the cloak of night, he fights crime using self-designed equipment and custom armor. But this version of Gotham is steeped in new complexity: Alfred Pennyworth is revealed to be an MI6 agent stalking Bruce, while many of his foes are unsettling childhood friends. Furthermore, the dynamic shifts dramatically with the Joker evolving into a billionaire.
The creators driving this vision are Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, who are deeply involved in the development process. Snyder will serve as both executive producer and showrunner, ensuring the narrative maintains an intricate balance between street-level crime and high-stakes espionage.
Meanwhile, the Clown Prince of Crime gets his own spotlight with Joker: Laugh Riot, an anime series set to explore a brutal trajectory. This project brings DC animation veteran Jim Krieg on board as executive producer, tasked with charting the ruthless crusade launched by The Joker after Batman is murdered. The focus here is on the chaos and ambition of a villain driven by a quest for meaning in Gotham’s underworld.
Adding another layer of unexpected charm, the third series introduces Krypto. This untitled project focuses on Superman’s loyal white dog and his unlikely companions—a gang of misfit criminal wannabes living nearby. The narrative beautifully explores themes of pure nature and redemption as Krypto’s inherent goodness slowly begins to redeem those around him. C.H. Greenblatt, known for his work on SpongeBob SquarePants, steps in to executive produce this heartwarming story.
