When major animation directors step into the streaming world, the question isn’t just about content—it’s about context. This principle is currently playing out for Brad Bird, who is bringing his upcoming animated feature, Ray Gunn, to Netflix.
Despite the broad appeal of his work on films like The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, Bird and his team are pushing for more than just a digital premiere. They are fighting for the theatrical experience, believing that cinematic presentation is essential to truly appreciate the scope of their vision.
At the heart of this quest is an appeal rooted in genuine passion. Speaking recently at the Annecy Festival, Bird made it clear that he remains a staunch advocate for a cinema run. He stressed that seeing the film on the big screen is, in his opinion, the definitive way to experience it.
“I’m very grateful that the film exists, and it exists because Netflix was willing to take a flyer on the idea and they’ve been tremendously supportive,” Bird noted. “That said, it’s not news to anyone that I’m a big fan of theatrical… I believe it’s the best way to see this movie the first time you see it.”
This push for broader exposure is more than just an artistic preference; it highlights a growing tension between streaming convenience and traditional cinematic presentation. While Netflix offers access, Bird is urging audiences to seek out the grandest possible screen.
For now, the distribution structure remains complex. Netflix typically limits theatrical runs to select titles, but for Ray Gunn, the director has offered a directive: find the biggest screen you can, even if it means finding it down the street at a neighbor’s house.
The film is set to debut on the streaming service on December 18th. It stars Sam Rockwell as Ray Gunn, a hardened private detective navigating a galaxy populated by alien beings, alongside co-star Scarlett Johansson.
Behind this project is Skydance Animation, which has reportedly delivered very high test scores for the film, though some discussions are still swirling regarding its overall rating. Regardless of the debate over scores, Ray Gunn promises an engaging mystery and a unique vision from one of animation’s most celebrated minds.
