Tomi Adeyemi, the visionary behind the bestselling novel Children of Blood and Bone, has recently made an unexpected public move, signaling a significant distance from the upcoming film adaptation of her epic fantasy world.
This decision comes at a moment when the cinematic journey—which she co-wrote and executive produced—is already underway. The film, directed by filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, had premiered its first footage, generating anticipation for what is set to be a sweeping visual spectacle. Paramount has slated a release date for January 15th, 2027.
Despite the buzz surrounding production and scheduling, Adeyemi has chosen a different path for herself. Using platforms like TikTok, she shared a candid reflection on her decision, explaining that she will not be speaking about the film because she has not yet seen it. She admitted that holding back from the public has been painful, though she emphasized that her focus remains on more meaningful causes than mere celebrity attention.
The message underscored a deeper commitment to personal boundaries: “I have not seen the film, and I will not watch it. It’s been painful holding this back from you all. … And I’m sorry if any of you thought I didn’t care about US. More than any glitter.”
This boundary-setting was further illustrated by a message Adeyemi shared with actress Amandla Stenberg, who stars as Princess Amari in the adaptation. In the communication, she asked that all future contact be strictly limited: “Do not ever use my name in an interview or video again. Do not text me. Do not call me.”
While the reasons behind this public retreat remain private, it is worth noting that Paramount made a commitment to Adeyemi during early development, ensuring she retained creative control over the screenplay from the outset. This dynamic unfolds against the backdrop of an ambitious fantasy saga.
The narrative itself promises a rich tapestry of political intrigue and high-stakes adventure within a fantastical African kingdom. The story centers on Zelie (played by Tsuo Mbedu), a young woman who embarks on a perilous quest to reclaim the powerful magic that was violently stolen from her people by the ruthless King Saran (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
Zelie must forge an alliance with the royal family—including Princess Amari (Stenberg) and Prince Inan (Damson Idris)—to resist Saran’s brutal rule. The ensemble cast brings incredible depth to this conflict, featuring Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, Diaana Babnicova as Folake, and Regina King as Queen Nehanda.
