When Entertainment Fails: Ruben Östlund Details the Chaos Behind “The Entertainment System Is Down“
Filmmaker Ruben Östlund, known for dissecting social discomfort in masterpieces like Triangle of Sadness and Force Majeure, is diving into a new realm of dark comedy with his upcoming disaster drama, The Entertainment System Is Down. And this time, the plot isn’t built on grand geopolitical shifts or marital woes; it’s inspired by something far more chaotic: an epic flight fueled by legendary binge drinking.
The story behind the film is rooted in a truly bizarre anecdote involving cricketer David Boon, affectionately known as ‘Boony.’ Legend has it that during a massive journey from Sydney to London in 1989—the notorious ‘kangaroo route’—Boon participated in a legendary session, reportedly consuming fifty-two cans of beer in a single flight. This story provides the foundation for the film’s absurd premise.
Östlund drew further inspiration from his time spent exploring the Australian landscape while relaxing in Majorca. He noted that the Australian men he encountered possessed a unique blend of qualities: “They have a very friendly, warm atmosphere. At the same time, they are very manly.” This sense of laid-back intensity seems perfectly mirrored in the journey undertaken by the passengers aboard his fictional aircraft.
The film is set on one of these long-haul flights, approximately twenty-four hours in duration, connecting continents. The specific setting involves a group of boisterous and defeated cricket fans traversing the route just as Australia faced its loss in the Ashes to England. Everything is perfect until the plane’s entertainment system suffers a catastrophic failure.
With all forms of organized distraction gone, the crew must quickly devise a plan to keep the passengers entertained. What begins as a simple attempt to settle on a shared film rapidly devolves into a spectacular clash of desires. Some passengers insist on watching Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Leviathan”, while others demand a lighter Adam Sandler comedy. The resulting discord escalates quickly, pushing the situation from uncomfortable disagreement to outright anarchy.
In a move that pushes the disaster into the realm of physical peril, crew members resort to opening part of the aircraft floor to attempt repairs. This desperate act inadvertently triggers a chain of events that ultimately compromises the very safety of the plane, transforming an entertainment mishap into a genuine crisis.
Östlund is planning a unique approach to the film’s release, intending to premiere it during an actual airline flight in collaboration with an airline partner. The film will then reach theaters via A24.
