Switzerland is often painted as a postcard of chocolate box vistas, serene wealth, and idyllic surroundings. But beneath this polished surface, a starkly different reality hides—a dark underbelly that demands attention. Director Jan-Éric Mack has plunged into this reality with a compelling drama that forces the audience to confront the harsh consequences of societal neglect.
This is a story about a single mother, down on her luck, whose life unravels when her children are taken into custody due to accusations of neglect. The initial catalyst for this devastating situation stems from a tragic accident: the older child accidentally sets the family home alight.
The fallout is immediate and brutal. Following the fire, the children are placed into foster care, and their mother is legally barred from any contact with them. To survive in this grim existence, she must navigate an impossible schedule, holding down two demanding jobs: working in a laundry during the day and appearing two evenings a week in a nightclub.
The film focuses intensely on the experience of the protagonist, Niki, portrayed superbly by Anna Schinz. We witness her relentless fight against insurmountable obstacles as she desperately tries to reclaim her children from the system that has sought to tear them away.
Schinz herself conceived the initial vision for the narrative and joined the writing team, lending a deeply personal touch to Mack’s exploration of social hardship. The story is presented purely through Niki‘s eyes, offering an intimate, unfiltered look at her struggle.
