A story steeped in longing and the quiet urgency of time is heading to the spotlight at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where Šimon Holý’s fourth feature film is vying for recognition in the prestigious Crystal Globe Competition.

At the heart of this cinematic journey is the compelling performance of Pavla Tomicová as Zdena, a middle-aged widow navigating the stifling routines of her small town while harboring grander dreams for a life lived elsewhere.

The film begins by establishing this deep yearning. Zdena’s world is one of routine, but it is punctuated by moments of profound reflection—visiting her elderly mother in a care hospital and finding fleeting peace in the mundane tasks of her post-office job.

Through these quiet scenes unfolds an emotional quest centered on connection and mortality. Zdena seeks to realize a wish, one that seems almost impossible to attain: a visit from a well-known singer to her mother while she lies in her hospital bed.

This dream hangs suspended until the return of her adult son, Lukáš (Jan Cina), who brings back news from France. His arrival introduces a stark reality, as he informs his mother that her grandmother has very little time left.

The narrative skillfully weaves together these disparate threads: Zdena’s personal yearning against the backdrop of her family’s impending loss. The film explores the complex relationship between memory, desire, and the finite nature of life, using the intimate setting of a hospital and a quiet post-office to amplify universal themes of love and farewell.

It is this delicate balance between deep personal emotion and poignant reality that gives Holý’s latest feature a powerful and unforgettable presence at the festival.
