  • Netflix & Shawn Levy Team up for Live-Action Adaptation of Major Gaming IP

Netflix is diving deep into the world of Japanese role-playing games, gearing up for a major expansion of its video game adaptation slate. The streamer has teamed up with producer Shawn Levy to develop a live-action series based on the beloved Persona franchise, promising to bring this globally recognized phenomenon to the big screen.

This ambitious project is anchored by compelling creative talent. Christopher Monfette has been tapped to craft the narrative, serving as executive producer and showrunner for the live-action series. Monfette brings a rich pedigree, having penned successful works like 12 Monkeys, Star Trek: Picard, and 9-1-1, adding gravitas to the adaptation of this unique gaming universe.

The production is backed by a stellar team, including Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood, who are executive producers through their banner, 21 Laps—the company behind Netflix’s global hit, Stranger Things. Other key figures joining the effort include Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and SEGA’s Toru Nakahara.

The source material itself is deep and enduring. The Persona franchise debuted in 1996 with Revelations: Persona, offering fans a world where Japanese high school students navigate everyday life while confronting supernatural forces. With six main entries and fifteen spinoffs, the story offers endless avenues for dramatic exploration.

The franchise is clearly thriving, constantly feeding new content to its dedicated fanbase. While Persona 5: The Phantom X launched in 2025, the story isn’t slowing down. Fans can expect more, with a seventh mainline entry, Persona 6, reportedly already in development for June 2026, and Persona 4 Revival scheduled for February 2027.

This move fits perfectly into Netflix’s current strategy of embracing gaming IP. The platform has already demonstrated its appetite for these adaptations with massive hits like The Witcher, Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

By taking on the Persona adaptation, Netflix is not just chasing a trend; it is tapping into a globally devoted audience eager to see their favorite gaming worlds translated into cinematic epics. With producers like Shawn Levy and writers like Christopher Monfette steering the ship, the live-action journey of Persona is set to be an exciting, captivating event for streaming audiences worldwide.
