As we look ahead to 2026, the cinematic universe is gearing up for a monumental event: Avengers: Doomsday. This film is slated to be the penultimate installment in the Multiverse Saga, promising a clash of heroes pulled from across Marvel’s reality against one of comic book lore’s most formidable antagonists, Doctor Doom.
But beyond the spectacle of impending conflict, there’s an interesting shift happening in the narrative structure. While Avengers: Doomsday is undoubtedly coming, many fans are aware that this pairing was not the initial blueprint laid out by Marvel Studios for the Multiverse Saga.
The original vision for the overarching threat of this era centered around a different figure entirely: Kang the Conqueror. Jonathan Majors was cast as Kang in this planned trajectory, setting the stage for him to be the ultimate antagonist throughout the saga.
Marvel Studios did introduce elements of Kang early on, first seeding his presence in Loki Season 1. This character then made his full debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania before eventually assuming the role of main villain in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
The pivot to Doctor Doom for the final confrontation, while offering a compelling new dynamic, highlights how storytelling evolves. It demonstrates a creative choice to introduce an established, potent villain into the closing act, bringing a specific sense of legacy and rivalry to the climax of the Multiverse Saga.
