Director Dan Trachtenberg has built an impressive legacy within the franchise by steering three Predator movies across different timelines and concepts, including Prey, the animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers, and the sci-fi adventure Predator: Badlands. This consistent work has kept 20th Century Studios highly invested in his future endeavors, particularly concerning Arnold Schwarzenegger’s potential return to the franchise.
While the shadow of the Predator lingers, Trachtenberg is now channeling his creative energy into a fresh and unexpectedly lighthearted venture. He has recently signed a three-year first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, where he will develop, direct, and produce feature projects alongside producing partner Ben Rosenblatt.
And what is the inaugural project? Prepare for some family-friendly thrills as Trachtenberg is embarking on an animated adaptation of the horror comedy indie comic, Freddy the 13th.
This new project takes the premise from Yehudi Mercado’s comic, which follows the hapless Freddy Vanwinkle. During a family vacation, everything goes hilariously awry when Uncle Freddy accidentally kills the Boogeyman and inherits his monstrous powers. The story captures the trials and tribulations of this son, who must navigate thirteen nights of chaos to break a curse.
The film is poised to deliver exactly what audiences crave: scares mixed with laughs for the whole family, with expectations set for a PG rating. It’s a perfect blend of comedy and horror, turning a vacation into a full-blown nightmare.
For Trachtenberg, this move isn’t just about a new title; it reflects a broader creative phase. He noted that he is currently in a space where he is exploring multiple exciting ideas simultaneously—a process similar to how he developed Prey. Now, following his work on the Predator universe, he is looking to weave new, distinct narratives, ensuring that the next chapter of his career is as dynamic and diverse as possible.
