In 1969, Jean Pierre Melville’s Army of Shadows offered a stark, uncompromising look at the French Resistance. It remains a controversial masterpiece, providing a bleak but essential view of resistance based on real experience.
Now, that powerful legacy is being reborn with a striking new cinematic approach. A collaboration between production company Two Cities Television, StudioCanal, and the UK’s Channel 4 is breathing new life into the narrative, drastically shifting the setting from Nazi-occupied France to a near-future authoritarian Britain under de facto American occupation.
This ambitious project aims to redefine the classic story by grounding it in contemporary political tension. The six-episode series follows a former British Army officer who must build a covert resistance cell from scratch, watching as young recruits fight fiercely to reclaim their country and secure their futures.
The creative team is bringing significant gravitas to the project, with support from the estates of both Melville and Joseph Kessel, whose 1943 book inspired the original film. Showrunner Ronan Bennett, known for adapting Frederick Forsyth’s The Day of the Jackal, steers the direction of this new vision.
Filming is already underway, demonstrating that the historical weight of the story translates seamlessly into modern drama. Recent set photos from the shoot in Lark Lane, Liverpool, have shown scenes featuring armed officers emerging from a blacked-out van outside the Old Police Station, immediately establishing an atmosphere of tension and action.
Behind the camera, the production bosses, Michael Jackson and Stephen Wright, reflect on why this story feels so urgent now. They point to a palpable sense of political discontent felt globally, particularly in the United Kingdom.
“There’s something out there, something in the zeitgeist. We live in a very febrile political atmosphere and we live in an atmosphere particularly in England where violence on the street can happen very quickly. I’d hope that’s why it resonates. People are feeling frustrated and not heard.”
The series taps directly into this mood, exploring themes of frustration and the struggle for agency within a restrictive system. It is a compelling look at how resistance evolves across different eras.
Beyond the scope of this historical reimagining, the production house is also developing other ambitious projects. They are currently working on The Yank, a story that pairs stars like Kate Mulgrew and Colm Meaney to explore a seasoned NYPD detective’s break on Ireland’s west coast, drawn into a murder investigation involving a climate activist.
