Adeyemi revealed that she had sent a direct message to Stenberg asking for a commitment to respect and privacy. The message was clear: “Do not ever use my name in an interview or video again. Do not text me. Do not call me.”
Stenberg shared the emotional weight of this interaction, noting how meaningful that exchange was. She reflected on how Adeyemi’s own journey—growing up as a Black girl who faced prejudice—inspired her to write the series, aiming to give Black girls of all shades stories about themselves. The novel itself plunges readers into a world defined by deep magic, royal conflict, and fierce survival. It follows Zélie Adebola as she fights against a ruthless monarchy determined to eradicate magic, seeking to restore power and justice in the land of Orïsha.
