Every year, the allure of the Venice Film Festival draws cinephiles to the luminous streets of Northern Italy. For a seasoned attendee, it’s a pilgrimage to witness the latest cinematic trends, but this year, the experience proved to be a mixed bag. Despite the tradition, the selection for Venice 2026 left some eager viewers feeling decidedly underwhelmed.

Returning for the tenth time, the filmmaker found the lineup this year a significant disappointment. While the festival offers an incredible opportunity to catch world-class cinema, this year’s curation failed to deliver the compelling films that warrant the spotlight. The enthusiasm for the event is undeniable, even if the film selection itself faltered.

During the festival, the attendee managed to view a staggering 32 films. This extensive viewing spree provided a deep dive into the cinematic landscape, but it also magnified the feeling of dissatisfaction with the overall presentation. The goal of finding hidden gems and breakout hits among the debuts was ambitious, but the results were less glowing than hoped.

The awards ceremony brought a familiar level of critique. Although Woman Unknown took home the Golden Lion, it did not rank among the films that truly captivated the viewer. A stark contrast emerged with the Grand Prix runner-up, Possible Love, which many felt deserved the top honor instead.

The overall mood, however, remained one of hopeful searching. Despite the challenging selection, the filmmaker managed to curate a list of six films that stood out as true favorites. These six selections represent the moments of genuine brilliance that shone through the noise of the festival, proving that even among a disappointing line-up, quality can still be found.

The experience ultimately underscores a timeless truth: the magic of a film festival lies not just in the awards, but in the personal discovery of compelling storytelling. While the 2026 selection presented some hurdles, the sheer joy of being immersed in the world of cinema remains the ultimate reward.
