Stop-Motion Magic Meets Pokémon: Aardman Joins Disney for Massive Animated Adventure

The worlds of animation and pop culture just collided in a way that promises a truly whimsical journey for fans. Disney and The Pokémon Company International have officially inked a deal that will bring a slate of new animated series from the beloved Pokémon franchise directly to the Disney+ streaming service.

At the heart of this exciting collaboration is a unique creative partnership. The centerpiece of the new lineup is the stop-motion masterpiece, Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu. This unique series brings the signature tactile artistry of Aardman—the studio famous for classics like Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep—to the Pokémon universe.

The production is guided by Aardman’s talented team, including director Tom Parkinson, model-making creative lead James Young, and creative director for intellectual property development, Nat McKay. Their involvement ensures that the familiar Pokémon world is filtered through a fresh, playful, and wonderfully tactile perspective.

The adventure itself is set in the vibrant Galar Region, where the main characters navigate the landscape while working to help and protect the local Pokémon population, adding a layer of endearing stakes to the familiar quest.

This exciting deal also encompasses rights to existing properties, including Pokémon the Series: The Beginning, which is already streaming on Disney+ and aired on Disney XD earlier this year, ensuring a rich and consolidated viewing experience for fans.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, emphasized the powerful connection between the franchise and its audience. He noted that Pokémon possesses a rare ability to resonate deeply with long-time fans while remaining completely relevant to young audiences today.

Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu” blends this enduring appeal with Aardman’s signature stop-motion artistry, offering audiences a fresh and engaging way to experience characters they already know and love.

The anticipation is already building, with the first teaser for the new series now available, hinting at the delightful, tactile adventures awaiting viewers on Disney+.
