Alfonso Cuarón’s next horror movie project

The Evolution of Vision: Alfonso Cuarón and the Quest for the Shadow

The partnership between director Alfonso Cuarón and his son Jonas has always been a cinematic success story. Their collaboration on the epic space drama Gravity in 2013 was a monumental achievement, earning seven Academy Awards and securing Cuarón an award for Best Director. Despite the intense focus on spectacle, their dynamic—which Cuarón described as being about being director and writer rather than simply father and son—proved that family can indeed ignite some of cinema’s most breathtaking visions.

Now, the creative energy is channeled into a new venture: the immigrant film Cabacho Champion. This latest project demonstrates their continued ability to explore ambitious narratives, shifting focus from the vastness of space to the complex human experience of migration and identity.

Beyond their own projects, Jonas has shown a keen appreciation for cinema that masterfully blends genre with social commentary. He has highlighted the brilliance of Korean filmmaking, praising titles like The Host, Parasite, Hope, and No Way Out. Jonas finds that these films excel at weaving important social themes into their genre narratives, all while incorporating a wonderful sense of humor—a lesson that undoubtedly feeds into the creative wellspring of both father and son.

As they look toward the future, Cuarón is exploring a different cinematic territory, hinting at a shift toward the darker side of storytelling. He is currently developing a new screenplay rooted firmly in the horror genre, suggesting an appetite for exploring more intense psychological landscapes.

This interest is already manifesting in a new television series: Ascension. This upcoming thriller series, set to stream on Apple TV, is spearheaded by Cuarón and the talented team behind Relic and Apartment 7A. Natalie Erika James and Christian White are co-showrunners, and James will be taking the helm as director. Ascension is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days, following Rose, a relentless documentary filmmaker and divorced mother who ventures into uncovering secrets about the mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension.

Rose’s journey is one of profound discovery. Initially drawn by the teachings of the group, she finds refuge, but as she delves deeper into the Church of Ascension, she uncovers a far more sinister reality hiding beneath its surface. The series delves into profound questions of evil, innocence, and the terrible sacrifices people make to protect those they love, especially when the greatest threat may originate from within themselves. It is a compelling look at the fine line between faith and fear, and the shadows that lie just beyond the light.
