The ambitious sequel to Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Romulus” has officially hit the brakes, leaving behind a trail of stalled ambitions and shifting directorial plans. What began as a potential continuation of one of the franchise’s most talked-about cinematic universes has now entered indefinite limbo.

The development saga was already complicated by changes in personnel. Fede Alvarez, who had been deeply involved in the pre-production phase alongside producer Rodo Sayagues, stepped away from the project in early September of last year, though he remained committed as a producer. This sudden exit sent the entire venture into a significant tailspin, immediately raising questions about the future direction of the film.

Rumors swirled among industry watchers regarding potential creative shifts. There was speculation that Alvarez might have sought to cast Michael Fassbender in David’s role, but this idea reportedly did not align with producer Ridley Scott’s vision, who indicated he wished to return to the series in a different capacity. Efforts to bring in other talent also proved challenging; for instance, discussions with Sebastien Vanicek, known for his work on films like Evil Dead Burn, ultimately did not materialize into a formal collaboration.

They are actively pursuing other avenues for new content. For example, Brian Duffield, who writes and directs his own project Whalefall, is currently developing an entirely separate “Alien” film that the studio is keen on exploring.

Meanwhile, the stars associated with the original film are busy moving onto new endeavors. Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are set to take on other major projects in the near future, indicating that momentum within the franchise remains strong, even if the specific sequel is on hold for now.
