Amanda Plummer joins Cuarón’s horror series Ascension
The Cult of Ascension: Where Evil Meets Innocence on Screen
A new wave of dark, psychological horror is brewing on Apple TV with Ascension, a series steeped in the chilling atmosphere of cultism and hidden truths inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days.
The production of this unfolding horror epic is anchored by an extraordinary creative team. The series is co-written by the acclaimed Alfonso Cuarón, known for masterpieces like Gravity and Children of Men, alongside his brother Carlos Cuarón. Showrunning duties and the demanding role of lead director are shared by Natalie Erika James, author of Saccharine and Apartment 7A, Relic. This pairing promises a cinematic vision that dives deep into the terrifying intersection of evil and innocence.
The premise centers on a relentless documentary filmmaker grappling with the limits of her own morality. When she embarks on an investigation into a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds herself drawn into its teachings. The journey, however, quickly reveals that the answers she seeks are far more insidious than she ever imagined, forcing her to confront the dark secrets buried beneath her own desire to protect those she loves.
Adding depth and raw performance to the narrative is a stellar ensemble cast. Joining the team as series regulars are the dynamic Amanda Plummer, celebrated for her work in films like Pulp Fiction and Needful Things, the sharp Christopher Chung, known for his roles in Slow Horses and Doctor Who, and the compelling T’Nia Miller, recognized for her work in The Haunting of Bly Manor and Generation Z.
These newcomers join the already established core of the series, which features the formidable Caitríona Balfe, who commands the lead roles and serves as executive producer, alongside Bill Nighy.
Ascension promises a haunting exploration of how far humanity will go to protect itself, and perhaps, how far one will go to protect the ones they cherish. It is a descent into cult-induced horror that asks uncomfortable questions about morality, sanity, and the terrifying cost of seeking truth.
