Amanda Seyfried rejected Gamora role fearing movie failure

The universe is full of unexpected companions, and sometimes the best adventures come with a talking raccoon and a huge living tree. While the unconventional cast of Guardians of the Galaxy might have seemed like a recipe for cinematic disaster for Marvel Studios, the film proved to be a massive hit, spawning a successful franchise filled with sequels, holiday specials, and various spin-offs.

Amidst the fanfare surrounding the franchise, one star who once believed the movie would flop was Amanda Seyfried. She ultimately turned down the role of Gamora, a decision that, years later, she happily defends.

When asked about her choice, Seyfried reflected on the perceived absurdity of the project at the time. She admitted that in the moment, she thought the movie would certainly fail: “I think turning down Guardians of the Galaxy was just so obvious to me at the time,” she explained. “I was like, ‘This is not going to be a hit. The tree and the raccoon are talking to each other. And also they’re all in space.’ And I was just like, ‘This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad.’

Though hindsight paints a different picture, Seyfried has no regrets. She maintains that the choice was deeply personal, made for herself and her family. “I mean, obviously I was wrong. But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have,” she stated. She added that her preference lay in avoiding the spectacle of stunts and heights, preferring to hold onto something real rather than pretending the entire world.

Seyfried’s career journey has taken her through some compelling narratives, including her role as Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the disgraced biotechnology company Theranos, in The Dropout.

In a parallel vein, the power of documentary filmmaking continues to shift cultural conversation. Nathan Fielder’s documentary You Can See Everything has been hailed as a monumental achievement, pushing the boundaries of the genre. Reviewers found it utterly compelling, describing it as the definitive depiction of a story already told across various media, wrestling with an enigma without offering easy answers. It is a film that answers questions with further questions, ensuring it will remain one of the most talked-about cinematic experiences of the year.
