Amazon revives Stargate with WandaVision’s Jac Schaeffer
The legendary Stargate franchise is gearing up for a potential revival, bringing a familiar creative force into the orbit of Amazon MGM Studios. The buzz centers around creator of the hit series WandaVision, Jac Schaeffer, who is reportedly developing a brand-new television series within the iconic sci-fi universe.
This isn’t the first attempt to bring the gateway to the stars back to the screen. A new series had previously been ordered, only to be scrapped, leaving fans with a lingering sense of anticipation. Now, it seems the franchise is getting another shot at rediscovery, promising a fresh perspective on the wormhole mythology.
The creative team slated to tackle this new chapter includes Schaeffer alongside executive producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, assembling a group poised to redefine what comes next for the Stargate world. While details remain under wraps, the expectation is that Schaeffer will infuse the project with the narrative depth and emotional resonance she demonstrated in WandaVision.
The previous push to revive the series involved a group of established names, including Martin Gero, a writer known for his work on Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, along with veteran producers like Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi. However, this effort faced hurdles. Reports suggest that Amazon executives were reportedly hesitant about Gero’s vision, concerned it might not achieve the broad appeal necessary to attract a wider audience beyond the existing dedicated fanbase.
Despite the setbacks, the enduring appeal of the franchise fueled a passionate campaign from fans who sought a continuation. Rumors have since surfaced regarding the potential return of familiar faces, including Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson, exploring alternate realities and scenarios that delve deeper into the mythology of the gate.
The history of Stargate is rich, dating back to 1994 with the original film and subsequent television adventures. It evolved into a sprawling saga with hits like Stargate SG-1, the deep-sea exploration of Stargate Atlantis, and the cosmic scope of Stargate Universe. With a legacy built on exploration and adventure, the prospect of Schaeffer guiding the next evolution of the franchise offers a tantalizing opportunity to honor the legacy while inviting a new generation of viewers to explore the gates once more.
