The sprawling, epic world of Warhammer 40,000 is getting a massive cinematic and animated makeover, thanks to a collaboration between major studios and celebrated creative minds. Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop are reportedly deep into developing a new animated series set in the grim darkness of the far future.

Adding even more weight to this exciting development is the involvement of former Man of Steel star Henry Cavill, who is slated to executive produce the project. Cavill brings a significant star power and experience, especially as he continues to develop a live-action series currently in production at Amazon.

The animated series will not exist in isolation; it serves as a compelling spin-off of Amazon’s existing animated anthology, Secret Level. That anthology previously featured a notable Warhammer 40,000 episode in late 2024, setting the stage for this expanded narrative.

The creative core of this new project is being shaped by filmmaker Mike Flanagan, who has joined the team as an executive producer, and reportedly will serve as a potential showrunner and director. This collaboration promises to inject fresh directorial vision into the established universe.

At the helm of the new animated series is Dave Wilson, who is co-creator and director of the project. Working alongside John Orloff, known for iconic projects like Masters of the Air and Band of Brothers, Wilson is crafting a story focused on the elite group of Space Marines known as the Deathwatch, tasked with hunting down alien threats across the galaxy.

Wilson emphasizes that the original concept was designed to be a launchpad for larger storytelling. He noted that the positive response to the previous Warhammer episode demonstrated how much care fans put into building the world, giving him the opportunity to tell a long-form story set in Warhammer 40,000 that he has pursued for over two decades.

The executive production team is stacked with talent, including creator Tim Miller, who will partner with Wilson. Other key names attached to the project include Natalie Viscuso, Andy Smillie, and Roy Lee.

This animated venture further solidifies Amazon’s trend of investing heavily in gaming intellectual property. Following successes like Fallout, the studio is actively pursuing other gaming-based content, with live-action series such as Tomb Raider and God of War already in production.

Other major gaming franchises also sit on Amazon’s development radar, including Mass Effect, Wolfenstein, and Life is Strange, suggesting that the push for immersive, high-quality fictional universes driven by gaming IP is a defining characteristic of the studio’s current strategy.
