Anything But Ghosts Obsession follow-up sets 2027 release
The world of cinematic horror is buzzing with anticipation, thanks to the creative force of Curry Barker. Following the massive success of his prior project, all eyes are now fixed on his next venture, Anything But Ghosts, which is set to hit theaters nationwide on May 7, 2027.
This new feature follows Barker and his longtime creative collaborator Cooper Tomlinson as they dive headfirst into a terrifying spiral. The film positions the protagonists as wannabe ‘ghosthunters’ who quickly find themselves overwhelmed as reality dissolves into terrifying chaos.
The ensemble cast is packed with familiar talent, including Viole McGraw, Chris Reinacher, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul, lending gravitas to the increasingly frantic narrative.
Tomlinson has already offered a deliciously wry take on the film, comparing it to a bizarre cinematic mashup. He described the experience as being like “if Key and Peele walked into Hereditary. It’s a buddy comedy, you know, about these two guys, and it turns really scary.”
Barker’s approach to horror often finds the strange side of the genre. His previous work, such as Obsession, showcased a knack for mixing the macabre with laughter. One reviewer noted that Barker guides his films with a sure hand, using moments of gore and gallows humor to highlight the terrifying truths beneath the surface, forcing the audience to laugh while simultaneously grappling with classic horror tragedy.
Beyond the ghostly adventures, Barker is also gearing up for a seriously dark reimagining. He has announced plans to write and direct a new take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24. Barker expressed excitement about this project, emphasizing a desire for a version that possesses genuine heart. He noted that while the action must remain brutal, the characters should be deeply compelling, allowing the audience to genuinely care about their survival.
Barker has also weighed in on the evolution of the franchise. He expressed reservations about many of the sequels, remakes, and prequels that followed the original, suggesting that the potential for the series had not been fully realized and that many of the adaptations veered in directions they shouldn’t have.
With two major projects in the pipeline—the high-stakes, darkly comedic chase of Anything But Ghosts and a brutal, character-driven horror epic in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre—Curry Barker is firmly established as a director who doesn’t shy away from exploring the most obsessive and terrifying corners of the human experience.
