Atwell’s Captain Carter Disservice
Hayley Atwell is reflecting on the challenges faced by characters seeking their place in the cinematic universe, particularly regarding the treatment of her beloved Captain Carter persona in Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Carter, a beloved spin on Peggy Carter from the MCU, had already enjoyed significant acclaim in the animated “What If” anthology series before transitioning to the live-action realm. Despite this history, Atwell expressed profound disappointment with how her character was handled in the film.
The issue centered on her appearance in the live-action movie, which felt like a brief, almost dismissive cameo. Instead of being developed, the character was introduced and quickly eliminated by Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.
Speaking at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London, Atwell detailed her frustration. She felt the character was treated too lightly, emphasizing that her presence was minimized.
If I’m really like brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene. It’s so small, and she gets frisbeed to death. I tried on set to kind of go, ‘Can I just add? Can I just suggest?’ And they were like, ‘Sure, but no.’ I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character.
Atwell felt that the limited role was a disservice to the character she had cultivated over time. This experience highlighted a broader desire for deeper, more meaningful narrative arcs for characters brought to the screen.
Looking ahead, Atwell remains hopeful for future opportunities. While she is expected to return as the more regular Peggy Carter in upcoming projects like “Avengers: Doomsday,” she hopes that filmmakers will eventually grant her Captain Carter guise more substantial screen time. She voiced a desire for more depth, hoping that in the future, the narrative will allow her character to have a greater role.
