The pilot featured mature themes, including binge drinking, cigarette smoking, cocaine, and a threesome. While his daughter loved the story and wanted to watch more, McKenzie admitted he quickly realized the content was more complex than he had anticipated for a young viewer.
Despite the themes, the show’s impact remains undeniable. McKenzie suggests that the themes explored in those early narratives still hold relevance, noting that today, teenagers come up to him seeking discussions about these very topics, underscoring the timeless human experience that lies beneath the surface of any great teen drama.
