The wait is finally over for fans of the dramatic world of HBO; filming for the third season of “Big Little Lies” has officially kicked off, though perhaps for just a brief moment.

The initial shoot took place on a single day at Warner Bros. Studios Burbank’s The Ranch Lot on Thursday. This brief appearance saw recurring actress Merrin Dungey return to the role of Detective Adrienne Quinlan, continuing her journey with the celebrated series.

While the cameras were rolling, the reason for the single-day effort was purely logistical: to ensure the production maintained its approved California state tax credit. This strategic move allowed the production to adhere to the required timeline, which mandates that principal photography must begin within 180 calendar days of the Conditional Allocation Letter date.

Though the initial phase is complete, the full production schedule for the next season is still being finalized, with an official start date yet to be set.

Behind the scenes, the creative team is already shaping the narrative for the upcoming installment. Liane Moriarty’s recent novel, “Big Little Truths,” is expected to provide the rich storyline that will guide the story forward over the next decade.

The creative leadership for the third season is already in place, featuring Francesca Sloane, who will write the first episode and serve as executive producer alongside the powerful trio of David E. Kelley, Nicole Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon.

Although the director for the season has not been officially confirmed, a DGA-approved director already involved with the series was present on set this week, adding another layer of established talent to the production.
