Bloodiest Slasher returns for Seconds in 4 months
The year 2026 has proven to be an absolutely fantastic ride for the horror genre, delivering several truly colossal films that have captivated audiences worldwide. At the top of the list are two breakout spectacles, Obsession and Backrooms, which are setting new standards for creative terror.
But while the overall horror landscape is bright, the slasher subgenre has presented a more complicated, often mixed, picture. This particular category has seen a varied output, ranging from genuinely thrilling experiences to entries that struggled to connect with viewers.
Some titles managed to capture the zeitgeist with undeniable flair. For instance, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma shone brightly, emerging as a steamy standout at Cannes. Other films in the category, such as Ready or Not 2 and They Will Kill You, delivered satisfyingly bloody entertainment that kept fans hooked.
However, the subgenre is rife with polarizing entries. The franchise’s latest installment, Scream 7, unfortunately settled for the bottom, emerging as by far the lowest-rated entry in the iconic horror lineage.
Adding to the mixed reception are older, highly anticipated projects. The long-gestating film Psycho Killer, penned by Andrew Kevin Walker, faced widespread criticism from both critics and audiences, proving that not all classic horror concepts translate smoothly to the modern screen.
Despite the mixed critical reception, the potential for the slasher genre remains potent. Even outside of theatrical releases, the appetite for violent, stylish horror continues to grow. This appetite is demonstrated by the early festival appearance of In a Violent Nature: Part 2, a sequel to a modern slasher classic that showcased more violent and stylish kills, signaling exciting developments yet to come.
