Brian Duffield on working on an Alien movie

The world of cinematic horror and science fiction is constantly buzzing with whispers, and lately, the Alien franchise has been no exception. One particularly persistent rumor involved director Brian Duffield, suggesting he was on the verge of helming the next installment for 20th Century Studios. But when the speculation reached a fever pitch, Duffield stepped in to set the record straight, revealing a story far more nuanced than simple sequel speculation.

The buzz began circulating when industry insiders, including Daniel Richtman and Jeff Sneider, hinted at Duffield’s potential involvement in a new Alien project. This immediately raised the question: was he scripting the next chapter, or was the studio simply seeking writing assistance?

Duffield explained that the rumor stemmed from a brief period where the studio requested his writing help on an Alien project. While he did contribute, he made it clear that this collaboration was limited to a couple of weeks, and he declined to identify the specific film. He emphasized that this work occurred while he was actively engaged in directing the critically acclaimed Whalefall, a project involving the same studio and creative team.

“I’m not doing an Alien movie,” Duffield stated. “I know how the rumor started, but no one’s ever asked me to direct an Alien movie. 20th needed some [writing] help for a couple of weeks, and I helped while I was doing Whalefall because it’s the same people and studio. So that’s not what’s next for me, but hopefully they get it up and running soon. Those actors are so awesome.”

While Duffield confirmed his contribution to an unspecified Alien project, he did not confirm any plans to take the franchise in a new direction. This clarification only deepened the existing narrative surrounding the franchise’s uncertain future, forcing fans to weigh several compelling possibilities.

Alien: Romulus was a financial triumph in 2024, grossing over $350 million worldwide. A direct sequel seemed inevitable, yet the search for a new visionary director has created a creative bottleneck. Fede Álvarez, who co-wrote the follow-up, remains attached as a producer, but the challenge now rests on finding the right creative mind to guide the next chapter.

Meanwhile, another major thread of speculation centers on Ridley Scott’s desire to delve deeper into the franchise’s mythology. Scott has recently reignited interest in continuing the prequel storyline that began with Prometheus and evolved into Alien: Covenant. Scott is keen to explore the unresolved themes of artificial intelligence, particularly focusing on the android David’s journey after the events of Covenant.

As the franchise navigates these divergent paths—between a potential sequel to Romulus and a philosophical prequel focusing on AI—the next cinematic move remains a tantalizing mystery. Whether the focus shifts to continued space horror or profound technological exploration, the future of Alien is shaping up to be an exciting, yet unpredictable, cinematic adventure.
