Clayface solid Wildwood struggles box office
The cinematic landscape is heating up this weekend, offering a fascinating mix of colossal blockbusters and critically acclaimed indie gems. As audiences navigate the theaters, a variety of films are battling it out, setting the tone for the coming weeks.
At the top of the conversation, DC Studios’ Clayface is proving to be a surprisingly solid performer. While critics have offered mixed reviews, the audience response has been overwhelmingly positive, boasting a remarkable 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. This success is further validated by post-screening data, with exit polls suggesting the film commands a solid 4.5/5 stars, making it one of the most highly rated projects in the Gunn & Safran universe to date.
The financial performance of Clayface is particularly striking. Pulling in $3.5 million during previews, the movie is currently on track for a substantial domestic start, estimated between $23 million and $25 million. Considering its hefty $44 million production budget, this run is shaping up to be quite the success.
Meanwhile, the independent and animated spheres are seeing their own impressive showings. A24’s You Can See Everything has already made a strong splash, securing $25.6 million in its first week. Industry watchers predict it will maintain this momentum, with estimates pointing toward a second weekend performance likely exceeding its opening figure, potentially hitting around $19 million.
The stop-motion world also delivered a thoughtful entry with LAIKA’s Wildwood. Hailed by stellar reviews, the Travis Knight-directed film has generated significant buzz. Although previews were modest, the film is expected to deliver a strong opening weekend, with estimates placing its debut between $11 million and $13 million, putting it squarely in the conversation with established animated hits like Kubo and the Two Strings.
Not every film finds this success, however. Some entries experienced a significant stumble. The highly anticipated Street Fighter saw a notable drop, taking in $9.5 million, a staggering 79% decrease from its opening weekend figures.
In the comedy category, the acclaimed Wicker, starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgard, is finding its footing. After pulling in $620,000 in previews, expectations are high for a $6 million debut, positioning it as a strong contender in the fifth spot.
Adding another interesting note, Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun, while a limited release, is anticipated to perform well, with projections suggesting it will gross around $900,000 over its initial three-day run.
