Crypt Keeper resurrected for FearFest
The ghostly laughter is returning. After years of waiting, the iconic host of Tales from the Crypt, the inimitable Crypt Keeper, is making a grand comeback for AMC’s 30th-anniversary FearFest. This is not just a rerun; it is a full-fledged resurrection, bringing one of horror television’s most beloved and macabre figures back to the screen in a fresh, animated form.
To bring this legendary character back to life, director The Walking Dead and special effects master Greg Nicotero took the reins. Nicotero recreated the famous puppet at his KNB EFX studio, breathing new life into Kevin Yagher’s legendary presence with refreshed movement, personality, and visual flair, all while preserving the character’s instantly recognizable qualities.
Joining Nicotero in this creative endeavor is the voice that defines the character: John Kassir. Kassir is once again lending his trademark voice, signature laughs, and deliciously gruesome wit to the new segments. The combination of Kassir’s iconic delivery and Nicotero’s masterful visual direction results in a truly unforgettable experience for horror fans.
Nicotero expressed the joy of the project, noting how thrilling it was to revisit the character and engage with some of his clever quips and puns again. He described the process as stepping back in time, re-creating the puppet in his studio, and directing these new FearFest spots.
The return is particularly meaningful because the Tales from the Crypt franchise has navigated a complicated history involving rights issues. Attempts to revive the property in the past, such as a planned TNT series, ultimately stalled due to these legal complexities. However, bringing the Crypt Keeper back focuses the excitement squarely on the character himself, offering a spectacular tribute rather than a full series revival.
The celebration is part of AMC’s massive FearFest event, which kicks off October 1 on AMC and AMC+. Over the month, viewers can dive into more than 650 hours of pure horror programming, featuring marathons of classics like Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and movies from the Stephen King library.
Fans of the original anthology series have ample opportunity to stream the classic seven seasons of Tales from the Crypt on AMC+ and Shudder. The original HBO series, which ran from 1989 through 1996, was a landmark in horror television, featuring the Crypt Keeper introducing self-contained stories filled with dark humor, gruesome deaths, and some of the era’s most celebrated guest stars.
In addition to the Crypt Keeper festivities, FearFest also showcases other thrilling content, including the AMC premiere of The Terror: Devil in Silver and the exclusive AMC+ series YAGA, starring Noah Reid, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hudson Williams. For now, the Crypt Keeper is officially back, ready to deliver more laughs and frights to the masses.
