Dance Troop conjures Satanic Panic in Teen Horror
The old fear of the “satanic panic” still echoes in modern culture. Back in the late eighties and early nineties, suburban parents grew convinced that heavy metal and horror movies were responsible for sending their children into devil-worshipping, murderous rages. While the notion sounds amusing today, it was fueled by very real historical events, like the conviction of the West Memphis Three and the McMartin trial. Now, a new wave of teen horror is emerging on streaming platforms, tapping into those same anxieties, suggesting that some fears seem to be rearing up again in certain quarters.
This modern fear is neatly packaged in the new Netflix series The Body, a story that blends psychological dread with the chaos of adolescence.
The series draws inspiration from the very roots of teenage angst and horror. It is based on the experiences of creator Quinn Shephard, who brought a fresh, raunchy spin to the material. She describes the project as a teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror, drawing heavily from classic cinematic and literary influences such as Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures, Mean Girls, Carrie, and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible>.
The narrative kicks off with a pivotal event: a group of girls undergoing a dance-team initiation that spirals into something far more unsettling. Their shared experience leads them to begin having prophetic visions, setting off a mass hysteria that shakes their small town.
The Body is set to debut on Netflix on November 11th, bringing a fresh-faced ensemble cast. The series features talented young actors including Kristina Bogic, Sara Boustany, Sofia Wylie, Geena Meszaros, Shirley Chen, and Gabby Windey, the winner of The Traitors.
With the explosion of young adult (YA) programming across streaming services—from Amazon’s hits like Off Campus and Sterling Point to Netflix’s reliable success with Outer Banks—the question remains: will The Body be the next major horror breakout? The answer will likely be found when the series premieres.
