Delightful Animated Short Direction les Champs from France
There is something truly magical about anticipation, and recently, a delightful animated short film has captured that feeling perfectly. From the heart of France comes Direction les Champs, a charming 7-minute animated piece that beautifully captures the yearning for adventure, all set against the backdrop of a summer dream.
This exquisite short is the graduation project from students at the prestigious Gobelins animation school in Paris, showcasing the incredible talent emerging from one of the world’s most esteemed animation institutions. The film uses warm, emotionally driven animation to tell the touching story of a young girl and her older brother, whose world is poised on the brink of excitement.
The narrative centers on the family’s shared excitement for the upcoming Tour de France, which is finally coming to their small village of Laventour. For eight-year-old Sophie, this event represents a grand adventure, and her older brother, Benoît, shares in the anticipation, creating a wonderful, relatable story about shared dreams and the joy of waiting.
What makes Direction les Champs truly stand out is the dynamic visual style. The animation begins with a beautifully painted 2D look infused with deep emotional nuance. Yet, the story is brought wonderfully to life through shifts in style, moving into a more visually goofy and wacky aesthetic, particularly during scenes like the brothers riding a scooter past cows. This playful contrast injects humor while never sacrificing the genuine humanity at the core of the narrative.
The film is a magnificent display of artistic range, demonstrating how technical skill can be married to profound feeling. It proves that animation is not just about spectacle, but about capturing the authentic, messy, and wonderful nature of human experience.
This short joins a distinguished lineage of animated work from the Gobelins school, including other celebrated pieces like Nube, Tears of the Mountain, Niccolo, and the compelling horror short Hôtel Nuit Noire. Each film demonstrates the power of storytelling through movement and color, making them essential viewing for anyone who appreciates animated art.
