Digger’s $250 Million Loss

The corporate landscape is always shifting, and for those at the helm of Warner Bros. Discovery, the recent acquisition of Skydance has brought a fresh set of creative and financial challenges. And right now, one specific project is sitting squarely in the spotlight, facing a stunning financial reality.

The focus is on Tom Cruise’s blockbuster film Digger, which has reportedly become an enormous financial liability for the studio. Initial estimates suggest the film is poised to incur a loss potentially reaching $250 million.

This figure is not just a significant hit for the film; it places the loss among the largest for a single motion picture in recent memory, rivaling the financial struggles of massive tentpole releases like The Marvels, John Carter, and Strange World.

Earlier reports had estimated the loss to be considerably smaller, floating around $125-150 million, though insiders are now factoring in the complex post-theatrical revenue streams to arrive at this much larger figure.

The numbers paint a stark picture when viewed against the investment. The film debuted to just $21 million worldwide last weekend, far short of the expectations set by its massive budget. Insiders estimate the film will likely fail to clear the $40 million mark globally.

The financial scale of the endeavor is staggering. The reported budget for Digger stood between $163-173 million. Adding to the complexity, the production was also influenced by an unexpected insurance settlement, which involved approximately $100 million spent on marketing.

Adding another layer to the financial tapestry, Warner Bros. Pictures fully financed the project, a move that often distinguishes major studio productions from those that rely on external financial partners.
