Disney+ has officially given the green light for a live-action adaptation of the beloved Archie comic book series, launching an hourlong drama series titled Afterlife with Archie. This project, penned by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, promises to plunge the familiar, all-American town of Riverdale into a brutal zombie apocalypse.

The development process took time, arriving nine months after Disney+ initially committed to the project back in October, solidifying a significant script-to-series commitment for the streaming giant. With over three billion copies of Archie Comics having been sold throughout the last 85 years, the stage is set for this adaptation to bring a monumental piece of pop culture into the spotlight.

This cinematic universe isn’t new; characters from the comic world have already graced the screens in various high-profile adaptations, including The CW’s Riverdale, Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the film Josie and the Pussycats. Now, Disney+ is taking that rich, established world and injecting it with a terrifying, yet uniquely teenage, twist.

The series will premiere in Halloween 2027, giving audiences time to prepare for an apocalyptic storyline steeped in high school drama. The production is helmed by the same creative powerhouse behind successful shows like Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.

The story pivots on a supernatural disaster. When a spell cast by a certain teen-witch backfires spectacularly, it unleashes an army of the possessed dead upon Riverdale. Faced with the undead threat, Archie and his friends must fight for survival in their familiar town, but the true horror lies not just in the zombies outside, but in trying to navigate the chaos of their own teenage years.

The narrative promises a deep exploration of human bonds.
