Dutch Cinema hypnosis experiment
What if you could relive a movie for the very first time? A Dutch cinema chain is putting this idea to the ultimate test, staging an experiment that blends the magic of cinema with the science of the mind.
Pathe is launching Pathé REWIND, an ambitious project designed to let film lovers experience their favorite movies as if it were the very first time. This unique cinematic journey is set to take place on November 9th at the Pathé Buitenhof cinemas in The Hague, Netherlands.
The experiment isn’t about simple nostalgia; it’s a deep dive into memory and perception. Around 30 film enthusiasts will participate in the test, guided by experienced hypnotherapist Victor Kraemer, as they attempt to intentionally forget their favorite film and then rediscover that initial, pure viewing experience.
To select the cinematic journey, participants first engage in a personal online session with Kraemer to gauge their deepest film preferences. This personalized approach ensures that the resulting experience is tailored precisely to the participants’ cinematic desires.
The true test of the experiment comes just before the screening. Participants will be placed under hypnosis again, preparing their minds for the immersive experience. The anticipation builds as they prepare to step into the shadows of their favorite cinematic memories.
Then comes the moment: watching the selected film on the big screen. The tension lies in the potential outcome—what happens when the conscious mind meets the subconscious memory? The films on offer are a potent mix of iconic storytelling, including classics like The Matrix, Se7en, La La Land, and the sprawling epic Interstellar.
While the process is framed as a psychological experiment, Pathé acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the process. The cinema chain notes that while hypnosis has not yet proven to reliably erase entire films, the results of the Pathé REWIND trial are expected to be fascinating nonetheless.
