Elliot Page’s terror playing Sinon in The Odyssey

Stepping into the shoes of a fictional killer can be terrifying, but for actor Elliot Page, the anxiety surrounding his role as Sinon in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was less about physical demands and more about artistic terror.

Page admitted that the jitters stemmed from the sheer creative freedom Nolan afforded him. The character of Sinon, a figure intentionally crafted by the director to exist outside the confines of Homer’s original epic, presented Page with the unique task of embodying a conscience that dared to confront the audience with war’s brutal reality.

“The character I play in this is actually not originally in The Odyssey,” Page explained. This lack of pre-existing structure meant he had to build Sinon from the ground up, tasked with forcing Odysseus—and by extension, the viewer—to stare directly into the devastation of conflict.

Working with a director known for impeccable vision and execution only amplified this feeling. Page described the initial conversations about the role as both inspiring and nerve-wracking. He spoke of collaborating with Nolan to define Sinon not just as a character, but as a living conscience, an uncomfortable truth about brutality and loss that needed to be delivered.

“I think I was terrified,” Page confessed. “It was the good kind of nerves—wanting to make sure I did an OK job and pulled off that vision in the movie.”

Despite the internal anxiety, the result was transformative. Critics lauded Page’s performance as the very heart and soul of the film. He managed to translate Nolan’s demanding thematic vision into a portrayal that resonated deeply with audiences.
