Endgame vs Avatar: The Box Office Battle
When a blockbuster epic returns, the expectation is massive. This weekend, Avengers Endgame: Encore hit theaters, bringing a dose of cinematic nostalgia and real momentum. Disney is clearly banking on this re-release to reignite the fire for the franchise, hoping to capture significant attention before the much-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday arrives in December.
But as the cheers die down, the real question hangs in the air: can this sprawling Marvel spectacle finally dethrone the reigning monarch of the box office, Avatar?
Early tracking suggests the encore will perform respectably, projected to earn between $25 million and $28 million domestically over the weekend. While that is a strong showing for a re-release, it faces stiff competition. Meanwhile, other films are vying for attention, with titles like Resident Evil’s reboot targeting $24 million to $26 million, and three other newcomers battling for the third spot, each projected between $15 million and $20 million.
The numerical reality, however, paints a more complex picture. Avengers: Endgame currently stands at $2,799.4 million worldwide, though this figure is split between $858.4 million domestically and $1,941.1 million internationally. In stark contrast, Avatar has cemented its status as the global heavyweight, sitting at $2,923.7 million worldwide.
The difference is substantial: a gap of exactly $124.3 million between the two titans. This means that even a strong encore performance from Endgame alone would leave the film roughly $96 million to $99 million short of claiming the top spot. Domestic ticket sales, by themselves, are not enough to close that gap.
To have any realistic shot at dethroning Avatar, Endgame must rely heavily on international audiences. The re-release serves not only as a warm-up but also as a strategic campaign leading up to the massive Avengers: Doomsday release in December.
In the wider cinematic landscape, other contenders are also making waves. For instance, Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently holds the highest worldwide gross in 2026 at $2,470 million, demonstrating that the race for the crown is far from over. For now, while the Endgame encore opens with fanfare, Avatar maintains its commanding position, suggesting that global audiences are still firmly behind the lush world of Pandora. The battle for the top spot remains an uphill climb for the Marvel epic.
