Epic Red Rising movie coming from Hunger Games director
A new cinematic universe is brewing on Mars, and the studio machinery has officially locked onto it. Paramount Pictures has scooped up the rights to adapt the massively popular dystopian sci-fi series Red Rising, bringing the epic tale of class warfare and rebellion to the big screen.
At the heart of the story is a world rigidly structured by a color-coded class system, where the Golds occupy the pinnacle. Our protagonist is Darrow, a young miner belonging to the lowest class, the Reds, whose existence is defined by relentless labor. After a devastating personal loss and a shocking revelation about his place in the hierarchy, Darrow decides to shatter the system, embarking on a perilous infiltration of the elite Gold society with the goal of revolution.
The rich lore of the series has already provided plenty of material, with previous installments including Golden Son, Morning Star, Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Light Bringer, with a seventh novel, Red God, already in the pipeline.
To bring this sprawling narrative to life, the studio has tapped director Francis Lawrence. Lawrence is a familiar name in the dystopian genre, having previously steered the course for the Hunger Games franchise, making him a natural choice to handle the epic scale and intense political drama of this new adaptation.
The script is being handled by Justin Rhodes, known for his work on films like Terminator: Dark Fate, promising a blend of high-stakes action and deep social commentary that fans of sci-fi will crave.
While the focus shifts to this new epic, the cinematic world continues to spin. Director Lawrence has also recently explored parallel dystopian settings with his upcoming project, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. This movie revisits the world of Panem, focusing on young Haymitch Abernathy twenty-four years before the events of the original trilogy, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell.
The cast for Sunrise on the Reaping is packed with talent, featuring Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, and Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow. The ensemble also includes Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, with Ralph Fiennes lending his presence as a younger President Snow, following Tom Blyth’s performance in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Sunrise on the Reaping is slated to hit theaters on November 20, 2027.
