When you pair the unsettling beauty of Southern Gothic sensibilities with the stark, dark vision of medieval horror, you get something truly memorable. This is the kind of artistic collision that makes you pause and wonder: why didn’t this pairing happen sooner?

Enter Ethel Cain and filmmaker Robert Eggers, two artists who have carved out a unique, atmospheric space in contemporary cinema and music. Their collaboration is culminating in a project that is less a film and more an immersive, haunting experience: the upcoming medieval horror film, “Werwulf.”

To bring the eerie world of “Werwulf” to life, Cain has contributed an original song to the soundtrack. But this wasn’t just any piece of music; it carried a distinct, historical weight. Cain is singing the track in Middle English, imbuing the score with an archaic, deeply resonant atmosphere that perfectly complements Eggers’ unsettling vision.

The song, titled “Wynter Waxeth,” is a creative tapestry woven by the three collaborators. It was co-written by Cain, Eggers, and the composer Robin Carolan, who previously shared a history with Eggers on acclaimed projects like “The Northman” and “Nosferatu.”

The resulting soundtrack is poised to capture the full scope of this collaborative effort. Back Lot Music will release the track “Wynter Waxeth” on November 13, setting the stage for the complete soundtrack to arrive on December 18.
