A new, chilling cinematic universe is brewing, thanks to director Mike Flanagan, who is taking the reins of a franchise steeped in dread: The Exorcist. The first teaser trailer has just emerged, promising a descent into the darkest corners of human history, starring an incredible ensemble cast including Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Sasha Calle.

This project is more than just a remake; it is a complete reboot, allowing Flanagan, the creator of acclaimed series like The Haunting of Hill House and Fall of the House of Usher, carte blanche to reimagine the mythology. The story opens thirteen years ago when New York City detective Julie Miller (Johansson) successfully ended the reign of terror brought by the satanic serial killer, Father Sunday. A hero forged in fire, Miller dedicated herself to her work, but the darkness she thought she buried remains a terrifying possibility.

Now, that buried past threatens to resurface. A new horror unfolds when a killer scrawls her name in the blood of an altar boy on the walls of a church crypt, dragging Detective Miller back into an abyss she thought she had escaped. The investigation leads her down a perilous path, aided by former prison chaplain Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who heard the final confessions of Father Sunday, and sharp rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle).

As Miller delves deeper, she uncovers a terrifying filament linking a lineage of serial killers—from H.H. Holmes to the Zodiac—suggesting an evil that goes far beyond the mortal realm. This unfolding narrative promises a journey into corruption, exploring how a single, potent darkness can infect everything and everyone, including the people Miller loves.

The film brings together a familiar group of cinematic heavyweights. Flanagan has assembled a stellar cast, including Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., and Benjamin Pajak, who will share the screen with the main cast.

Flanagan has been clear about his ambition, aiming to create the scariest movie he has ever made. With The Exorcist: Martyrs slated to open in cinemas in March next year, the anticipation is palpable. This cinematic reimagining stands alongside his recent work, including his reinvention of Carrie on Prime Video, cementing his status as a master of psychological horror.

The Exorcist: Martyrs will be in theaters on March 12th.
