Final Optimus Prime voice: Peter Cullen in new Transformers short

The world of Transformers is mourning the loss of an icon, but in his passing, Peter Cullen has gifted the community one final, unforgettable performance. After a long and storied career, the voice that defined Optimus Prime has now passed, leaving behind a legacy that is set to shine even brighter through new animated tributes.

To honor this monumental departure, a new animated short, Optimus Prime: Awakening, is slated for release. This 12-minute special will feature Cullen’s final original vocal performance as the beloved Autobot leader, weaving a new narrative that follows the established storyline of the original film.

More than just a retelling, the short serves as a heartfelt love letter to the Transformers community and a tribute to Cullen’s incredible contribution. The emotional depth of the project is amplified by the fact that it will also feature the voices of Frank Welker, who returns as both the formidable Megatron and the loyal Soundwave, bringing the saga to a poignant close.

The dynamic between Optimus Prime and Megatron was legendary, built on a foundation of profound respect and compelling drama. Frank Welker reflected on the partnership, noting that their characters were made for each other. He highlighted that Peter Cullen’s portrayal of Prime, rooted in his personal values of honesty, loyalty, and integrity, made their friendship resonate deeply. Welker expressed that having the opportunity to return as Megatron and Soundwave for one final story alongside Cullen was a true gift, emphasizing that the voice and heart of the original character would always remain central to Optimus Prime.

While the farewell is bittersweet, the celebration of the franchise continues. In a move to honor the franchise’s enduring cultural impact, The Transformers: The Movie is set to return to theaters in an extended “Apology Tour.” Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are bringing this defining cinematic experience back to audiences across the U.S. from September 17 to September 21.

This renewed theatrical run underscores the film’s status as a defining moment for fans across generations. Hasbro’s Vice President, Global Brand & Franchise Strategy, Action Brands, Alyse D’Antuono, noted that bringing the film back is an opportunity for longtime fans to relive the story and for new audiences to experience a crucial chapter of Transformers history.

To further celebrate the milestone, Shout Factory is also releasing a new 4K Steelbook of the film on November 17, ensuring that this epic story is preserved in stunning detail for years to come. These efforts ensure that the legacy of Optimus Prime, and the epic saga of Transformers, continues to inspire.
