Fincher ends deal with Netflix
The Great Exit: How David Fincher Closed a Chapter with Netflix and Unlocked a New Cinematic Universe
After thirteen memorable years spent crafting high-stakes narratives for a global streaming giant, director David Fincher has made a pivotal decision, choosing to end his long-running partnership with Netflix. This departure signals the end of a significant creative chapter, but it simultaneously clears the path for some of the most ambitious and electrifying projects of his career.
Fincher’s relationship with the streaming service began in 2013 with the acclaimed House of Cards. Since then, he became a powerhouse, delivering critically adored content that shaped the landscape of modern television. His portfolio for Netflix includes a range of cinematic achievements, from the slick political drama of Mank and The Killer to the visionary animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots and the psychological intensity of Mindhunter.
What made this collaboration so potent was the creative space Netflix provided. Fincher was able to exercise remarkable freedom, allowing his unique, exacting vision to flourish beyond conventional studio boundaries. It is a testament to his reputation as an in-demand director that he was able to maintain such artistic control while working on massive, global productions.
As his contract concludes next year, Fincher is pivoting toward a new narrative adventure. The focus now shifts to a project born from cinematic mythology: The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. This film, which originated from a scrapped script by Quentin Tarantino, has been the perfect vehicle for Fincher to explore gritty, character-driven storytelling in a sprawling period setting.
Set in 1977, eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the story follows Cliff Booth, who steps into the role of a fixer navigating the complex, volatile world of Hollywood. The film pulls together a heady cocktail of violence, ambition, and desire as Booth encounters the dazzling and dangerous figures of Charlie Peters, TV megastar Roderick “Hot Rod” Harrison, and mysterious gangsters causing chaos across Los Angeles.
The cast is stacked with talent, featuring stars such as Brad Pitt, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, and Carla Gugino, lending depth and immediate star power to the chaotic narrative. This is more than just a throwback; it is a reimagining of a fairytale into a gritty crime story, driven by the magnetic pull of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will offer viewers an exclusive two-week engagement in IMAX theaters globally starting on November 25, before making its highly anticipated debut on Netflix on December 23.
