Amazon Prime Video has unveiled Mike Flanagan’s new eight-episode television series adaptation, promising a fresh, expanded look at the story that has been adapted and retold across countless films and miniseries over the years.

Flanagan, known for his deeply emotional storytelling, took on the challenge of adapting this classic narrative, but he wasn’t interested in simply retracing familiar ground. In an interview, he explained his approach: “De Palma adapted it faithfully and beautifully 50 years ago. Then it’s been adapted twice after that, officially and unofficially. It’s been imitated scores of times. So for me, this was never going to be a straight adaptation. The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of Carrie.”

This creative pivot means the new series shifts the focus from a singular tragedy to an expansive, larger-scale drama. Instead of focusing solely on Carrie’s personal ordeal, Flanagan introduces various characters with their own distinct abilities, creating a world where the themes of social pressure, cruelty, and telekinetic power resonate on a much broader stage.

While maintaining the core emotional weight of the story and key characters, the series injects significant new dynamics. This artistic choice results in noticeable shifts in pivotal moments—most notably during the high school prom—giving the narrative an entirely fresh, cinematic energy.

The cast brings a compelling ensemble to the roles. Siena Agudong plays Sue Snell, Alison Thornton portrays Chris Hargensen, and Joel Oulette steps into the role of Tommy Ross. The series is anchored by an impressive group of actors, including Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
