Forget Superman and Brainiac: Man of Tomorrow’s Real Focus
The DC Universe is gearing up for a major cinematic event, and the buzz isn’t just about the familiar icons. Nathan Fillion, the seasoned actor who brings Guy Gardner to the DC Universe, has dropped a tantalizing hint about where the emotional heart of James Gunn’s upcoming Man of Tomorrow will truly reside.
When asked about the tone of the new film, Fillion pointed toward a deliberate shift in character focus rather than a change in cinematic style. He suggested that while the foundation remains strong, the spotlight will swing toward a figure many might not expect.
“In the first movie, and rightly so, we learn a lot about who Superman is,” Fillion explained. “In this movie, I think we’ll learn more about who Lex Luthor is, and I think it’s equally important.”
This statement signals a fascinating pivot for the sprawling saga. Instead of centering the narrative entirely on the classic heroic archetype of Superman or the superintelligent android Brainiac, the film is set to dedicate significant runtime to delving into the complexities of Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.
Even though the superintelligent android is driving the central conflict, this focus promises a deeper exploration of the human and intellectual rivalry at the core of the DC mythos. It suggests that the conflict between good and evil in Man of Tomorrow will be examined through a distinctly human, and perhaps more morally ambiguous, lens.
Beyond the plot points, Fillion shared a note of genuine warmth regarding his return to the franchise. He described stepping back into the role as a welcome reunion, noting how great it felt to pick up where they left off and reconnect with fellow castmates he had bonded with during the first project.
The actor also touched on his long-standing relationship with director James Gunn, a partnership that spans nearly a dozen projects. Fillion reflected that while the scope of their projects has expanded dramatically, Gunn’s core enthusiasm for storytelling has remained strikingly constant.
“Yes, he’s absolutely the same guy,” Fillion noted. “The only thing that has changed is the scope of his projects and the sheer number of people on his teams.” This evolution in scale has evidently led to an evolution in the caliber of the work, all fueled by Gunn’s unwavering passion for telling a compelling story.
