When prolific creator Ryan Murphy and FX team up, the result is often a dose of pure, high-octane drama. This time, they are diving into the stark, unsettling landscape of Bret Easton Ellis’s acclaimed novels to craft a new series called The Shards.

Set against the backdrop of early 1980s Los Angeles, the story plunges into the rarefied world of privileged high schoolers, following seventeen-year-old Bret (Igby Rigney). A nihilistic, bisexual trust-fund senior at the exclusive Buckley prep school, his existence is defined by boredom and existential angst.

But paradise has a dark undercurrent. When a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), arrives on campus, he brings an air of charisma that masks a deep, unsettling secret. As he integrates into Bret’s tightly knit social circle, the atmosphere shifts from ennui to paranoia.

Bret’s internal struggles are only amplified by his growing obsession with the disappearance of a serial killer known as the Trawler—a figure who hunts teenagers and seems to be closing in on their world. The pressure of social excess mixes dangerously with the terror of true violence.

The story is anchored by a cast of compelling performers, including Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds, Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer, and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright. Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jordan Roth bring depth to the ensemble alongside star Bret Easton Ellis’s foundational vision.

The Shards promises a sophisticated yet deeply visceral exploration of youth, wealth, and the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface of the American dream. Prepare for a drama that is as sharp as it is intoxicating.

The series premieres with two episodes on Hulu & FX on Wednesday, August 5th.
