Giacchino shares Them! remake visual update with Reeves

After years of anticipation, the promised remake of the classic sci-fi horror film Them! is officially showing signs of life. Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino has confirmed that he and Warner Bros. are actively pushing the project forward, bringing the tale of giant, mutated ants back to the big screen.

The development process, however, has been a marathon, involving studio shifts and scheduling hurdles. When asked for an update on the remake, Giacchino noted that while delays have occurred due to the larger corporate landscape, the team remains committed to bringing the vision to fruition.

“Now that the dust is sort of settling, we’re re-getting into it and my hope is that, yes, this is a movie that will get made and we’re doing the best we can,” Giacchino shared, signaling continued momentum for the project.

The original Them!, released in 1954, remains a beloved piece of cinematic history. It tells a story of people in New Mexico who are suddenly under attack by colossal, man-eating ants mutated by nuclear testing. The film featured a cast including James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, and Leonard Nimoy, before his iconic role in Star Trek.

Giacchino’s vision for the modern adaptation goes beyond mere spectacle. He sought to approach the source material through a contemporary social lens, exploring the film’s central theme of the “other” and the unknown. He explained that the original film’s concept—the focus on what one refuses or cannot understand—resonates deeply with modern themes, specifically addressing immigration.

This contemporary interpretation allows the cosmic horror elements of the story to serve as a powerful metaphor for the human experience, turning the fantastical monster into a reflection of societal divisions.

Adding weight and creative depth to the project is the involvement of producer Matt Reeves. Reeves brings a rich history with Giacchino, having composed scores for acclaimed films such as Cloverfield, Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and The Batman. This creative pairing promises a unique synthesis of cinematic history and modern storytelling.

Giacchino’s extensive career, which includes scoring hits like The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, further solidifies his capacity to handle this ambitious project. With continued commitment from the studio and the guidance of established talent like Reeves, the fate of the giant ants is undoubtedly moving closer to the screen.
