Gosling, NWR Reunion: Comedy Movie with a Catch

When the titans of cinema decide to team up, the audience holds its breath. Recently, that breath was released by director Nicolas Winding Refn, who revealed that he and superstar Ryan Gosling are exploring a third collaboration—and it’s not a somber, stylized drama, but a laugh-filled comedy.

The news emerged during his appearance at the Deauville American Film Festival, painting a picture of two creative forces who remain deeply connected, even as their individual careers evolve in parallel ways. Refn and Gosling have openly discussed how their paths have intersected, suggesting a natural chemistry that extends beyond their celebrated work in neon-soaked cinema.

Their shared history on screen is already impressive. They previously teamed up for the critically acclaimed and visually stunning Drive in 2011. In that film, Gosling delivered a hypnotic performance as a getaway driver, backed by a stellar cast including Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, and Oscar Isaac, earning Refn his Best Director prize at Cannes.

A decade later, they revisited their partnership for the intense and visually distinct Only God Forgives in 2013. This film further cemented their reputation for crafting unconventional, visually arresting narratives.

Now, the focus shifts to the future. The third project, rumored to be a comedy, marks a significant genre shift for both filmmakers. While the creative spark is undeniable, Refn played coy about a production timeline, comparing the uncertainty to the delightful ambiguity of Christmas: “It’s better not knowing what you’re going to get ’cause then you’re going to be a lot happier.”

Despite the tantalizing potential, the project remains in the early idea stage, as both Gosling and Refn juggle demanding commitments. This means that while the concept is bubbling with comedic promise, the film is not currently in active production.
