Gremlins 3 Delayed Spielberg & Columbus Return
The iconic world of Mogwai is getting a cinematic reboot, and while the wait has been lengthy, the payoff is certainly worth the anticipation. Warner Bros. has officially shifted the release date for the long-gestating Gremlins 3, offering fans a little extra time to savor the nostalgia, moving the premiere from November 19, 2027, to October 6, 2028.
Beyond the schedule adjustment, the studio has brought back a constellation of creative heavyweights to guide the revival, signaling that this sequel is far from a simple retread. The involvement of Steven Spielberg as an executive producer, collaborating alongside the legendary director Christopher Columbus, promises a blend of classic filmmaking pedigree and mischievous horror.
Columbus, known for directing beloved classics like the first two Harry Potter films and the timeless comedy Home Alone, now takes on the role of producer, bringing his unique touch to the franchise. This pairing of directorial genius and nostalgic character provides an exciting foundation for the new chapter.
The creative engine behind the new story is managed by Hannah Marks, who is building upon an original draft by Columbus, Zach Lipovsky, and Adam Stein. The production team is bolstered by experienced figures including Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario from Amblin Entertainment, alongside Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe of 26th Street Pictures.
The legacy of the Mogwai franchise is rich and storied. Joe Dante’s original 1984 film established the tone, centered on a boy who adopted a furry creature with two simple rules: keep it away from water and never feed it after midnight. Breaking these rules unleashed a wave of destructive gremlins that brought holiday terror to his town, a cinematic triumph that collected $212 million worldwide on an $11 million budget.
The franchise proved its staying power with its sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which managed $41 million and quickly earned cult status for its sharp, satirical take on corporate culture.
To expand the Mogwai universe, the franchise also branched into television with the 2023 animated prequel, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, further cementing the popularity of the creatures and their chaotic existence.
This exciting revival is part of a larger slate of entertainment news, including adjustments to the DC Studios slate, where Dynamic Duo has been moved to September 22, 2028.
