Gunn bends over backwards for Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in the DCU

The DC Universe is undergoing a seismic shift, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking the helm and establishing a new creative direction for the cinematic world. From the outset, the new era has been defined by bringing back beloved actors and carefully curating which characters get to step into the DCU.

The slate is already set with exciting talent, including Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller, John Cena as Peacemaker, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle. But the biggest question swirling among fans is which character will next make the leap to DC Studios: Harley Quinn?

Gunn has teased that bringing Harley Quinn into the DCU is a complicated proposition. In a recent podcast clip, Gunn noted that the relationship between Harley and the Joker is highly specific, and the dynamic has not yet been fully established within the DCU. This nuance makes Harley Quinn, in Gunn’s view, one of the more difficult things to justify as being canon.

Despite the complexity, the door remains open. Gunn expressed genuine enthusiasm for the possibility, mentioning that Margot Robbie is one of his favorite actors and that if she is keen to play the role, he would bend over backwards to explain the world for her. If she isn’t interested, he is prepared to look elsewhere, ensuring the narrative remains centered on the DCU’s overall vision rather than specific previous storylines.

Beyond character speculation, the focus is now turning to the next major cinematic event: Man of Tomorrow. This film promises a high-stakes confrontation as Superman and Lex Luthor are forced into an uneasy alliance to face an existential threat: the superintelligent Brainiac.

The ensemble cast for this epic features several familiar faces. David Corenswet steps back into his iconic role as Superman, paired with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Lars Eidinger is set to bring Brainiac to life, while Aaron Pierre will appear as John Stewart, playing the Lantern. Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane, alongside Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Rumors also suggest a potential twist, with Adria Arjona being considered for the role of Maxima, though many fans speculate she may actually be playing Wonder Woman. Milly Alcock is also expected to return as Supergirl, adding another layer of familiar energy to the proceedings.

The film is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, promising a dazzling new adventure for the DC cinematic world.
