Hal Jordan Explains Why He Doesn’t Wear the Green Lantern Suit

When crafting a superhero saga, the costume is everything. But for the new HBO series Lanterns, the journey to creating the iconic Green Lantern look was anything but straightforward. Behind the scenes, the team made some surprising, last-minute decisions about the iconic uniform, leading to a fascinating exploration of what it means to be a hero.

Actor Kyle Chandler, who portrays the veteran Green Lantern, shared the story of how the suit materialized on screen. During a recent appearance, Chandler revealed that the costume was not initially planned, adding a delightful layer of behind-the-scenes spontaneity to the production.

“They weren’t sure that there was going to be a suit, as I understand it,” Chandler explained. “And then towards the end, they decided, ‘Let’s have a suit.’” This decision sparked a creative process where the team developed three distinct costume designs before showrunner Chris Mundy and director James Hawes settled on the final, striking version.

Chandler’s involvement extended directly into the construction phase. He worked closely with costume designer Cynthia Summers, serving as the mannequin while the multi-piece suit was created and applied. He praised the artisans involved, calling the finished result absolutely incredible, even noting that the multi-piece nature of the costume requires about 45 minutes to put on.

While the visual spectacle was carefully managed, the narrative direction steered the series away from traditional superhero battles and toward a deeper, more contemplative mystery. The premiere episode introduces Hal Jordan operating largely in civilian clothes, focusing on detective work in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska, using his ring sparingly.

The show weaves an intricate timeline spanning from 2016 to 2026. In the present-day storyline, John Stewart returns to the setting only to discover Hal Jordan’s frozen body. This pivotal discovery strongly suggests that the era of the Green Lantern suit is firmly behind him, shifting the focus from cosmic spectacle to personal history and intense mystery-thriller elements.

Lanterns premiered on August 16, 2026, on HBO and streams simultaneously on HBO Max. The eight-episode season features a compelling cast, including Chandler and Aaron Pierre, alongside Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, and Nathan Fillion.
