HBO acquires Sarah Snook’s “The Birds”
The Sky Falls: HBO Brings Gothic Horror “The Birds” Back to Life with Sarah Snook
HBO is set to deliver a visceral, present-day reimagining of the classic gothic horror, The Birds, transforming Daphne du Maurier’s chilling tale and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film into a gripping new limited series. The project brings the chilling atmosphere of the original narrative into a modern, unsettling context, anchored by the formidable presence of Emmy-winning actress Sarah Snook.
Snook, known for her intense performances in shows like Succession, steps into the role of Myra Massey. Escaping a bitter custody battle, Myra returns to her isolated Alaskan hometown with her young daughter, embarking on a quest to uncover the truth behind a childhood friend’s suspicious disappearance.
But the investigation quickly spirals into something far more terrifying. As Myra fights to protect her family, she must contend with a new, inexplicable menace: vicious, deadly bird attacks that seem inextricably linked to the unfolding crime. Now, Myra is not merely closing a case; she is fighting for survival against threats that lurk both in the shadows and in the unforgiving Alaskan skies.
This adaptation pays homage to the source material while sharply differentiating itself from its origins. Where the original novella focused on an almost apocalyptic “home invasion” set in Cornwall, the series grounds the horror in a remote, unforgiving landscape, intensifying the sense of isolation and dread.
The series is helmed by a talented creative team, including writers Tom Spezialy, known for his work on The Leftovers and Watchmen, alongside executive producers Danny Samit and Jennifer Gabler Rawlings. This pedigree ensures that the story is delivered with a sophisticated, psychological depth.
The production is backed by Universal International Studios and Heyday Television, promising a high-quality cinematic experience that honors the suspense of the classics while delivering a truly modern, unsettling narrative.
