The DC Development Dilemma: HBO Reveals Where the Spotlight Is Shining
Following the recent awards season, the conversation around the direction of the DC Universe took a hard pivot. Chairman and CEO of HBO, Casey Bloys, recently opened up about the network’s upcoming slate, confirming a somewhat surprising reality: the pipeline for new DCU television projects has hit a distinct pause.
While speculation often swirls about potential new series, Bloys clarified that outside of the spin-off The People vs. Gorilla Grodd, no other proposed DCU TV series are currently in active development. This signals a shift from active creation to careful selection in how HBO approaches the cinematic universe.
Rumors had persisted about other potential projects, including ideas for Waller, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold, suggesting they were in the development pipeline. However, Bloys emphasized that these projects existed only as concepts, far from receiving the necessary green light to move into production.
When pressed on why these projects remained stalled, Bloys offered a philosophy rooted in industry experience. He drew a parallel to the notorious television phenomenon Game of Thrones, noting that many projects exist merely as development ideas. “People read about development and they assume that those are greenlit shows, and they’re development,” Bloys explained. “Everybody knows that development is just that – you’re trying things, you take big swings, not everything comes through.”
He affirmed that HBO maintains a highly selective approach to its DC endeavors. In his view, the network’s track record—spanning from Watchmen and Peacemaker to Penguin and Lanterns—demonstrates a commitment to quality. “We’re very selective. We’re careful about what we do, nothing has changed,” he stated. He advised fans to focus their attention on the projects that are actively moving forward rather than the theoretical possibilities.
The only project currently making significant strides is Gorilla Grodd, which has moved beyond development and has officially begun shooting. This focus highlights that when HBO does commit, it moves with purpose.
Meanwhile, other established series continue to resonate. Lanterns is currently performing strongly, enjoying growing episode ratings and significant fan engagement. Although there are ongoing discussions about potential season two, the focus remains on delivering high-quality storytelling rather than simply churning out endless content.
