Hellraiser Tabletop Games Coming Next Halloween
The world of Hellraiser is experiencing a major renaissance, fueled by exciting new video game releases and fresh comic book revivals. But the excitement isn’t just confined to pixels and ink; the franchise is now embarking on a profound journey into the tabletop gaming world, thanks to a major collaboration with its creator, Clive Barker.
To bring this expansive mythology to the gaming table, Salt Entertainment has teamed up with Clive Barker and Park Ave Ent. LLC to develop and publish a new line of officially licensed tabletop games. This initiative promises to explore the four decades of Hellraiser mythology through diverse and immersive gameplay, targeting both long-time devotees and new fans alike.
The first titles in this exciting new series are slated for release beginning Halloween 2027, marking the 40th anniversary of the original 1987 film. This project is designed to be a broad program, offering varied experiences rather than a single release, allowing players to delve into the themes of temptation, desire, consequence, and the terrifying unknown.
The initial slate of games promises a thrilling mix of mechanics. Players will encounter a fast-playing dice game centered on temptation and risk, an escape-room-style experience inspired by the mysteries of the infamous Lament Configuration, and a social deduction game where hidden desires and shifting loyalties make trust an impossible luxury.
The creative minds behind these concepts bring a unique perspective to the franchise. Veteran game designer Michael Shinall, known for titles like Bloodborne: The Board Game, will design a major new board game for Salt Entertainment, focusing on the internal psychological horrors that define the franchise. His approach brings a deep sense of dread to the game, exploring how the deepest terrors originate from within the human psyche.
Adding to this vision is acclaimed designer Francesco Nepitello, co-designer of The One Ring Roleplaying Game. Nepitello will tackle the tabletop roleplaying game (RPG), opening the franchise’s world up for original stories built around forbidden knowledge and intense desire. He is eager to explore how dread and temptation can be woven into a narrative that captivates players.
Clive Barker, hands-on with the project, views this move as an opportunity to invite players into unexplored corners of the mythology. “There’s something wonderfully intimate about gathering around a table to frighten one another,” Barker noted. “Curiosity is both the invitation and the trouble. I’m delighted that these games invite players into unexplored corners of the mythology. I suspect they’ll know certain doors ought to remain closed. I’m counting on them being unable to resist.”
The collaboration ensures that the legacy of Hellraiser translates beyond film and comics, offering a new, visceral avenue for exploring the beautiful, terrifying complexity of the Cenobite world through the interactive lens of gaming.
